Halloween!
Happy Halloween! I know you are more worried about candy and costumes than homework and school, so I'm going to make tonight short. We continued Reading groups just like yesterday. We finished our poetry in Writing. You can see them in our hall at Parent/Teacher Conferences tomorrow night (3:45-6:45). In Math, we made fraction turkeys. They are so cute! The students did very well on them. They are also on display in the hall. Come see us tomorrow night. Parent/Teacher Conferences are from 3:45-6:45. There will be a drawing for a gift card. Until I see you there, learn something new.

Insanely behind
It's been too, too long since my last post. I'm so sorry! I admit, I may have been ambitious to think I could update daily. I really am going to try to do better, though!
This is from last week.... We made a flip book to help us classify different genres of literature.
Today, we started new Reading groups. The students will be in these groups for a few weeks. Some of them are reading novels, and doing a book study in their groups. At one station (computers), students are on a program called Reading Plus. It's the best Reading program I have ever seen. You can check it out online. On iPads, students are reading digital books and playing word games (like Spelling City - which has the spelling words each week).
We have been working hard with fractions in Math. We have done several activities that involved food and fraction parts. Talk about fractions with your students at home. Fractions are everywhere.... in the kitchen, cooking, What fraction of your family is boys? What fractional part of your house is rooms with pluming? What fraction of a tv show is commercials? I could go on, and on, and on!
In Reading, we have been working in Reading groups and studying different genres. Please read with your child at least fifteen minutes every night.
In Writing, we have been writing an expository about seasons. Which season is your favorite? The students have done very well writing about their favorite.
In Science/Social Studies we have been studying weather and its effects on our world. We watched some footage on Sandy yesterday and talked about what it meant for our country. Please keep that area of our country in your thoughts and prayers. We also talked some about the election, but will really take a deeper look next week on election day. Discuss these current events at home. It's important for students to know what is going on in our world!
I guess that gets you all caught up. Please come to Parent/Teacher Conferences this Thursday night (November 1, 2012) from 3:45-6:45. I will be doing another drawing for a gift card. Mention the blog for a second chance to be entered! Until next time (which is tomorrow, I hope), go learn something new!

These are from Math centers last week. The students worked in groups to build and sell pizzas. We are studying fractions, so each pizza had a different set of fractional parts that the students had to figure out.

Last, but not least.... We went to the Perot today to see Steve Trash. He did a magic show that taught all about recycling. We had fun, and the students were very well behaved.
